Lamp shade makeover

16 Nov

I have recently been doing crafts for myself and doing projects that I have long wanted to do. Making things for other people is lovely, but it’s nice once in a while to be able to make something pretty and be able to keep it for a change!  I brought these two fat quarters from The Eternal Maker earlier in the year and knew that I wanted to use them for something for myself , and when the latest issue of Mollie Makes landed on my doormat it gave me the perfect idea!

The article ‘Queens Of Granny Chic’ attracted me instantly and I hope to buy the book it is based on very soon! (Granny Chic-by Tif Fussell and Rachelle Blondel ) One project in the book is how to cover and make a patchwork lamp shade. I wasn’t quite brave enough to make a patchwork shade, so decided to simply use the two fabrics for a panelled effect.

The lamp stand itself is straight from my parents 70’s living room and I love it, the shade though was slightly less inspiring so I couldn’t wait to bring it back to life.

I ripped off the old dusty and tired fabric and used the frame to turn it from this:

Into This!:

I used the old cover as a template and sewed the pieces together with the machine. It is an almost perfect fit ( not bad for a first attempt!) I then hand stitched the top and bottom seams to the frame itself which holds it in place nicely and helps to define the shape.  I’m thinking about maybe adding a tassel or pompom trim to the bottom. Would love to know what you think? x

Beautiful Blues Patchwork Quilt

2 Oct

I bought a gorgeous fabric bundle from Fabric Rehab ages ago with the intention of making a bed runner for my bed. The bundle consisted of 6 beautifully patterned cottons in lovely blues and floral prints. Straight away I chopped them up into squares and sewed together the top piece for my runner and that is how it stayed… Months later we got a very lovely,  but incredibly mucky puppy who likes to roll  and play around on our bed, so unless I wanted my runner to be covered in muddy paw prints and long golden hairs there wasn’t much point in making one!  This in mind I unpicked a few seams and changed the shape to create a rectangle suitable for a small quilt and I finally got round to finishing it!

I backed it with a lovely pale blue fine corduroy donated to me by a fellow crafty friend (thanks George!) and bound the edges with a dark blue satin bias. I had a few troubles with the corners and it is by no means perfect, but I am so pleased with the outcome!

The thick wadding I used and the corduroy give the blanket a nice cosy weight, perfect for those winter evenings.

I have since given it as a present to my mum for her newly decorated bedroom. It makes me happy to know it is in a happy home 🙂

Thistle Wool Shop

4 Sep

So my mum took me for my first visit to Thistle Wool shop in Cowplain on Saturday. It is utterly beautiful!

I didn’t even get a proper look at the wool as I was too busy looking at the gorgeous fabrics ( and we were short of time, as were we technically supposed to be helping strip wallpaper at my parents new house but hey ho…that’s what husbands are for surely?) I brought just a few fat quarters to keep me going. I think they are stunning and will hopefully help create  something beautiful.x
